Moj\u00e1car has a double celebration this week, commemorating both the traditional Saint Augustine festivities and the 35th anniversary of the \u201cMojaquera\u201d sculpture, one of Moj\u00e1car\u2019s most loved and representative works.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Made from white Macael marble by the internationally renowned sculptor Mar\u00eda \u00c1ngeles L\u00e1zaro Guil, the work has become an identity symbol for the municipality since its inauguration in 1989.
\nMar\u00eda \u00c1ngeles L\u00e1zaro Guil won the competition of ideas to create this work in Moj\u00e1car municipality thanks to the sketch she presented, which stood out for its respect for and homage to local roots and traditions. The marble block chosen by the artist defined the direction of the sculpture, following the direction of the grain to achieve both the curvature of the pitcher on the head and the position of the skirt’s flow, elements that capture the essence of the Moj\u00e1car women\u2019s traditional dress. This sculpture, strategically located in the Church Plaza, represents a Moj\u00e1car woman with the region\u2019s typical costume, highlighting her long skirt, apron, shawl, and the traditional pitcher on her head.
\nThe work not only celebrates the Moj\u00e1car traditional dress, but also pays tribute to the work and fundamental role of women in the local history and culture. “The Mojaquera sculpture is more than a monument; it is a reflection of our history and our traditions. That this anniversary coincides with the Saint Augustine festivities makes the celebration doubly significant, uniting our cultural heritage with our patron saint\u201d, the Moj\u00e1car Mayor said.
\nOn the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the sculpture, a poem written 35 years ago by a resident of Moj\u00e1car, Genoveva Bouloumi\u00e9, provided by the sculptor herself, has also been recovered and published in the patron saint’s festivities book.
\nThis commemoration is part of the festivities in honour of Saint Augustine, the patron saint of the municipality with a great programme. The day will begin with a mass at 12 noon followed by a procession with the image of the saint through the village streets at 1pm, and will come to a close with the traditional children’s ribbon run at 6pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
