{"id":5395,"date":"2017-03-09T09:22:11","date_gmt":"2017-03-09T07:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mojacar.es\/en\/?p=5395"},"modified":"2017-03-09T09:22:11","modified_gmt":"2017-03-09T07:22:11","slug":"moving-burial-of-the-sardine-in-mojacar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mojacar.es\/en\/moving-burial-of-the-sardine-in-mojacar\/","title":{"rendered":"Moving &#8220;Burial of the sardine&#8221; in Moj\u00e1car"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>Moj\u00e1car re-enacted the Burial of the Sardine, carrying on the tradition that marks the end of the Carnival and the beginning of Lent.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For the first time, Moj\u00e1car re-enacted the battle between Don Carnal and Do\u00f1a Cuaresma, a well-known allegory in the Libro del Buen Amor (Book of Good Love), written in 1330 by the Archpriest Hita.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the carnival group, &#8220;Los Implicados&#8221;, represented the challenge and the subsequent defeat of Don Carnal in the face of such an austere rival, in the town\u2019s Centro de Usos M\u00faltiples.<br \/>\nThe solemn burial of the sardine pageant was carried out after the battle at 8.00 pm, with several attendants who escorted the fish to its final destination.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd of locals and visitors who accompanied the funeral procession emphasized the greater participation, every year, of the town\u2019s non Spanish residents who enjoy getting involved with the local traditions.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous \u2018mourners\u2019 accompanied the beloved sardine along its candlelit final farewell with litanies, pronounced by the burial &#8220;priest&#8221; and responded to with passionate sorrow by those present. Each and every Saint\u2019s requests are relevant and to the point.<\/p>\n<p>The Moj\u00e1car Municipal Band played all along the route, putting a final musical touch to the Carnival.
