{"id":9273,"date":"2019-04-01T18:02:59","date_gmt":"2019-04-01T16:02:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mojacar.es\/en\/?p=9273"},"modified":"2019-04-01T18:03:23","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T16:03:23","slug":"mojacar-celebrates-its-traditional-dia-de-la-vieja","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mojacar.es\/en\/mojacar-celebrates-its-traditional-dia-de-la-vieja\/","title":{"rendered":"Moj\u00e1car celebrates its traditional D\u00eda de la Vieja."},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>Moj\u00e1car celebrates its traditional D\u00eda de la Vieja.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Moj\u00e1car recently enjoyed its age-old \u2018D\u00eda de la Vieja\u2019 party, which is always held after Carnival time, on the nearest Thursday to the midpoint of Lent.<br \/>\nIt consists of a day full of food and drinks in the town\u2019s countryside, all shared with family and friends, with the idea of bidding farewell to the winter and welcoming springtime.<br \/>\nEveryone\u00b4s picnic contains a \u2018Vieja\u2019 which resembles an old woman and, is a small doll with a cloth head that is stuffed with hidden sweeties then placed on a wooden cross.  Following an ancient tradition after the meal, the children impatiently wait for the time when they are finally allowed to break their \u2018Vieja\u2019 and find all the goodies.<br \/>\nTraditionally, it is also the day to eat the &#8220;Hornazo&#8221; (an elongated, sweet, braided bread enclosing a hard-boiled egg), although the party day is generally characterized by the abundance of all kinds of sweet and savoury foods that change with the times and people\u2019s tastes.<br \/>\nThe day of \u201cLa Vieja\u201d is the only fiesta that is not represented by a Saint, but by a pagan figure, although it still has some Christian roots and, the date of celebration is engrained into the Christian calendar.  Whatever its origin, the truth is that it has been celebrated \u2018since forever\u2019 and it is a custom that keeps going, generation after generation and, a time to look forward to some excitement and fun, especially for the little ones.<br \/>\nIt is believed that the figure of the \u2018Vieja\u2019 personifies Do\u00f1a Cuaresma who battles with Don Carnal at Carnival time and this special day is seen as some well deserved fun in the period of religious devotion and sobriety.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Moj\u00e1car celebrates its traditional D\u00eda de la Vieja.
