Mojácar begins its traditional festivities in Honour of San Agustín
Mojácar, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, will celebrate its big festival in honour of San Agustín, patron saint of the locality, from Thursday 25th August to Sunday the 28th, the saint’s day.
Following two years of forced suspension due to Covid, Mojácar is filled with light, happiness and many traditions, which throughout these days will be the common denominator of Mojácar life.
Starting at 12 noon, firecrackers will mark the beginning of the patron saint festivities, and at 2pm the midday fair officially opens in Plaza Nueva, where fine food and a great atmosphere guarantee a great start and a “tardeo”, or afternoon get-together, that invites families and friends to enjoy every day of the fair.
However, the day on Thursday will get going from 10am to 1pm with the 5th Recreational Digital Game Day aimed at young people aged eight to 14, and which will take place in the Guadalinfo Centre in the Mojácar Multi-Uses Centre.
Young people also take centre stage at 6.30pm in the traditional junior ribbon race, in which the seasoned participants will try to get the highest possible number of ribbons on their bicycles.
The “Prometida and Melodías” orchestras will be in charge of providing the music and dancing from 11pm onwards, making way at midnight for the opening address of the San Agustín 2022 festivities, which this year will be given by María del Mar Esteban López, family doctor at the Mojácar Playa health centre. The Queen and Ladies of Honour of the festivities will then be announced before the open-air dance continues.
A highlight on Friday 26th is the Ascent Uphill with Water and Floral Offering to the patron saint San Agustín, accompanied by the Municipal Music Band. Starting out from the fountain, the colourful procession will go up to the parish church, where the offerings will be left. As on all the days of the fair, the open-air dance will start at 11pm in Plaza Nueva.
On Saturday 27th the final day of the 11th Paddle Tennis Tournament will be held and the presentation of prizes will take place at 10pm at the La Mata facilities. The midday fair and the performance at 4.30pm by the “El Tinglao” flamenco group, and later the public dance, are the main activities of this day of festivities.
On Sunday 28th, San Agustín’s day, the festival activities will start early with the celebration of the 6th City of Mojácar Golf Tournament, which will be held on the Marina de la Torre golf course. The start for all the participants, a shotgun start, is scheduled for nine in the morning.
The Mass in honour of our patron saint will take place at 12 midday, accompanied by the Virgen del Carmen Rociero Choir. After the service, the procession through the different streets of the village will be followed by the Mojácar Music Band.
Following the centuries-old tradition, the ribbon race on horseback will take place at 6.30pm at the fountain, where the riders, on the backs of their mounts, will try to get the greatest number of ribbons which the women of the locality hang up high to make it more difficult.
The patron saint festivities in honour of San Agustín will come to an end at 1am with a spectacular castle of fireworks, although the music and the dancing will continue throughout the night with the group “Frecuencia Modulada”.
