The Solheim Cup trophy, corresponding to the most important biennial women’s golf tournament in the world, has been presented in Mojácar. It was taken to different parts of the locality accompanied by its ambassadors in Andalucía, Ana Moreno, ambassador of Alboran Golf and Lis Meins, ambassador of Aguilón Golf and Sports Councillor, Francisco García Cerdá.

The Mojácar Mayor received the delegation at the Town Hall, thanking them for the presence in the locality of such a coveted prize, that every two years pits Europe’s best golf players against the best US players.
Francisco García Cerdá also wanted to thank both the ambassadors and the Solheim Cup organisation for their generosity in allowing such a valuable cup, both at a financial level – it is made entirely of carved glass – and at a sporting level, to be within the reach of Mojácar residents before the celebration of the competition, which this year 2022 will be in Spain at Finca Cortesín in Casares, Málaga, as in the last edition the European golfers were the winners.
Hosting a world-renowned event like the Solheim Cup represents a unique opportunity for Spain and for the promotion of women’s golf. Spain, with 64,000 federated, represents only 27% of the total players in Europe.
Also noteworthy is the impact of the world of golf on tourism in Spain, the impact of which on local and national economies is very evident, especially in Andalucía, where we enjoy an ideal climate for the sport, principally in wintertime.
The Solheim Cup is played in the same format as the men’s Ryder Cup as it is the equivalent in the women’s game.
The initiative for this competition came from Karsten Solheim, founder of the American brand PING, which makes golf equipment. The first tournament was held in 1990 and it was then played in various locations in even-numbered years until 2002. After the Ryder Cup calendar was changed, it has been held in odd-numbered years since 2003 to avoid a conflict of dates.
Of the 17 tournaments played until now, the US has achieved victory on 10 occasions against Europe, which has only managed to lift the trophy seven times.
